‘Little Red Room’ (2013)

An installation comprised of over 45 decommissioned instruments donated by the Wirral Music Service. Destined for landfill, after thousands of hours of productive service, their carcasses were classified ‘beyond repair’.

The artwork referenced Mao’s ‘Little Red Book’ in its title as the instruments were almost entirely made in the Far East. As production lines now span the globe the ‘entry level’ instruments (that were  formerly sourced from Europe) now travel over 5000 miles to reach the UK. As the world’s leading producer of musical instruments, including stringed, electric and traditional instruments, China exports around 630,000 violins a year of which nearly one-third are produced in Beijing.
