Cart2Clyde <> MAIL ART PROJECT

A free Postal Art Project is happening this Summer in Renfrew, Scotland.

Open to anyone with a connection to the river or town - whether you live there now, have lived or worked there in the past, were born there, or simply know the location well.

Funded by OneRen Culture, in association with Fablevision, Creative Renfrewshire and the University of the West of Scotland. The project also contributes to the Creative Europe funded Turning the Tide initiative led by Intercult alongside Instytut Kultury Miejskiej, Artit, the Vienna Education Academy and Dear Hunter.

Inspired by the democratic history of mail art, Cart2Clyde invites participants to engage creatively with the River Cart, its ecosystems and its climate future. Through a series of playful, curious and thought-provoking prompts, the project encourages new forms of artistic expression whilst fostering a deeper awareness of local environmental issues and ecological connections.

What happens when I sign up?

Participants receive a specially prepared envelope in the post that contains paper-based materials, creative prompts, and a pre-paid envelope so that you can submit your work to the project*.

You’ll have TWO WEEKS to submit your entry once you receive your project pack.

What happens next?

Once completed, pop your art in a post box or post office (remember to check the weight in case it’s too heavy and you need to add any additional postage). Once received, artworks become part of the evolving Cart2Clyde project archive, culminating in a collective portrait of how local people imagine, experience and respond to the River Cart and its changing environment.

Then what?

The entries will be collated, digitised and uploaded ONLINE in the first instance.

As this is a pilot project the nature and number of submissions will decide the format of the final output.

As the project develops we’ll keep you updated as to whether the artworks remain solely online, become part of an Artists Film or are displayed within a physical exhibition space.

There may even be a celebration event and an Artists Talk about the wider project - if you decide to join us on the journey then WATCH THIS SPACE for further updates!

In the spirit of international postal art projects, the RULES OF ENGAGEMENT are simple:

  • No Jury – All submitted work is accepted and exhibited (provided it meets the weight and size requirements of the pre-paid envelope provided, or has been sent as a digital image).

  • No Fees – Participation is completely free.

  • All submitted works must meet basic ethical guidelines:

    • 1) Do not plagiarise or closely copy another persons work

    • 2) Avoid harmful, illegal or offensive content

    • 3) Do not include material that promotes violence, harassment, hate or unlawful activity

    • 4) Respect privacy, don't reveal personal information about others without their consent

  • No Returns – Submitted artworks become part of the project archive, will be uploaded digitally and will not be returned.

  • The Postal System is Part of the Art: The handling process itself (including stamps, postmarks, wear-and-tear and accidental markings by staff included within the postal service) is embraced as part of the artwork.

  • Creative Freedom – Participants are free to express themselves without traditional institutional gatekeeping.

*If your artwork expands beyond the dimensions of the envelope (maybe it’s a sculpture, for instance) then please feel free to include a photograph of the work in your return pre-paid envelope.
